Samuel Fleming Lewis

Samuel Fleming Lewis

Samuel Fleming Lewis is part of the design team at InStudio located on the port of San Francisco.  He will be exhibiting some of his more personal works as part of the Reclaimed Room’s next installation, The LIVING Show-Style & Sustainability.  Lewis reconfigures remnants of his past into artwork for the future.  He demonstrates incredible style and engages deeply with sustainable art practices, recycling broken mirrors, repurposing old media like Ebony and Interview magazines, and finding new life for leftover work products like furniture and architecture hand drawings and photographs remade into lanterns, mirrors and other unique designs.  Delve further into his process and personality by viewing our latest artist profile video.

Tony Hurd

Tony Hurd

Tony Hurd is a master builder.  His extraordinary talents explore reuse in dynamic and intuitive ways.  This exhibit brings forth his innovative living pod solutions, fanciful beehives and metal art that reflects serenity and family in vivacious ways.  Prepare for some surprises, too.  Hurd is a tornado of a artist and often whipping things together in his mind, body and soul.  He also invites you to physically engage with his work, sit, sand, relax and unwind within the pieces to truly appreciate this artist’s works.  See Hurd in action and some of the pieces that could not possibly fit in our venue in his artist profile video.

FUSIONS opens TONIGHT!

Many Building Resources regulars have been peeking into the new Reclaimed Room space to see what all the fuss is about.  Broken glass, huge carts, strange and interesting sculptures and more are transforming the room into FUSIONS.  FUSIONS features work by Reddy Lieb and Roland Blandy complemented by resident light artist Gregory Benke’s aerial spotlights.  Show opens at 5pm tonight and the reception lasts until 8.  We truly hope to see you there.  The event is free and there will be snacks and drinks provided.  The artists have worked hard to create and prepare this work for you and will be there in person this evening! 701 Amador Street, SF CA 94124.

FUSIONS-Artist Profiles

Banister Light

Reclaimed Room for Environmental Arts opens a new show on September 12.  Stop by from 5-8pm for refreshments and a celebration with Fusions artists Roland Blandy and Reddy Lieb in person.  I spent time with each of them in their studios and workspaces to learn more about how they create their pieces and what inspires them.  These profiles give you to opportunity to learn more about the deep relationship between the artist and his or her medium and the process that ensues to create this work.  Both artists begin with the deconstruction process (sometimes just plain destruction) and revive their materials with new life.  From glass works to funky creatures, repurposed  furniture and animated driftwood, this show promises to engage the senses and mind.

In The Yard (usually) at Building REsources

Building REsources has a unique blend of practical, strange and innovative offerings.  In the coming months, we will be working to help better demarcate the regular sections in the yard, highlight unique finds and educate the greater public about the amazing potential that resides in the concept of reuse.  Most of the regulars know what kind of gems one can stumble upon here but even the regulars have grandiose tales to tell of reclaimed materials they found no where else but BR.  Join this mini-revolution on the industrial shores of San Francisco’s bay, we are open every day from 9:00-4:30pm.  As a nonprofit organization, Building REsources partly operates through a generous grant from the San Francisco Department of the Environment.  Here is a breakdown of what we offer the community.

On JUNE 27th from 5-8pm, the Reclaimed Room opens its doors to the public with a reception for recycled artists Aleksandra Zee and Martha Jones with a unique light installation by Gregory Randolph Benke.  Celebrate the inaugural event of this exciting new project by Building REsources.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Aleksandra Zee creates three-dimensional objects from found and re-purposed materials, primarily reclaimed lumber.  Ranging in scale from small interventions to whole room distortions, she strives to transform the viewer’s perception of the space.  As a woodworker Zee creates anything from large scale wall hangings to furniture and tabletops.  Zee is interested in the transcendance of the harsh, broken, or discarded materials into objects of soft whimsy.  In much the same way, Zee wants the viewer to pause and lose themselves in the altered environment.

Originally from Southern California, Zee is inspired by her travels and living and working in San Francisco.

Martha Jones is a professionally trained interior & architectural designer, artist and owner of Green Mosaics.  Jones combines her passion for design, salvaging and reuse into creating recycled art for home & garden.  Intrigued by her mother’s Better Homes and Gardens magazines as a child, along with looking forward to local trash night, her unique art and approach blends her environmentally friendly  attitude while also slowing down the amount of material put into landfills.  Birdbaths are created from discarded satellite dishes, terracotta chimney inserts are mosaic-ed into garden columns, table tops are made from leftover vinyl flooring, and  junk mail, wallpaper and old calendars are used for collage picture frames and wall art.
